General Information


Wayanad, one  of the fourteen districts in kerala(India) 
situated at height of  700 m to 2100 m above sea- level,
came into   being   on   1st    November 1980 by merging 
North Wayanad, part  of  Kannur  district, South Wayanad 
of Kozhikode district and  is  situated  in  an elevated 
Picturesque mountainous Plateau in Western Ghats.Wayanad
is one of the most important historic place with evidences
of STONE AGE life.Natural wonders,history and tradition,
vast expanse of greenary,spice scented breeze, mist capped 
mountains,salubrious climate, hypnotising scenic beauty 
makes Wayanad one of the loveliest hill stations of Kerala. 

The leading tourist centers of south India like Ootty,
Mysore, Coorg, Kozhikode, Kannur and Bekal are around this 
hill station. 
This station is full of plantations,forests and wildlife.
Wayanad hills are continuous to Mudumala in Tamil Nadu and
Bandhipur in Karnataka, thus forming a vast land mass for
the wild life to move about in its most natural abode. 
 
The name Wayanad has been derived from the expression
 'Vayal nadu' - the village of paddy fields.

Important Towns
Kalpetta Kalpetta the Head Quarters of Wayanad is the only municipality in this Dist:. It is 72.K.M s north east of Kozhikode and is well connected by Road to all important places like Ooty,Mysore etc. All the major Office’s are situated here.
Sulthan Bathery :- Sulthan Bathery is one of the earliest settlement in Wayand located 25 Km.north east of Kalpetta. This place was the store of war weapons of Tipu Sulthan to fight against the British, hence the name Sulthan’s Battery.
Mananthavady:- Mananthavady is situated 32 Km north east of Kalpetta.This town is connected by roads to Mysore via Bavali,Coorg Via Tholpetty,Thalassery via Periya and Kozhikode via Kalpetta. Veera Pazhashi Raja's tomb is situated here.
Meppady:- Meppady is at a distance of 10 Km east of Kalpetta is an important place on the Kozhikode -Ooty state highway. There are some important tourist spots nearby Mepady.
Tourism
Wayanad has many tourist spot which could be developed into potential tourist destinations. Unfortunately due to want of proper marketing, locational advantages, poor infra structural facilities etc, many of these places are not visited by tourist. It is sad to note that only a small percentage of tourist who visit other parts of Kerala visit Wayanad. For those who wish to experiance the real natural spots untouched by human, WAYANAD is the best place. You find evidences of Stone age people only in Wayanad. Wayanad has a rare collection of Flaura and Fauna, some even reported extinct in RED Book.
Land & People
The district has an area of 2126 sq kms with a population of 6,72,000 as per 1991 census. Total geographical area of Wayanad Dist: is approximately 2.13 lakhs hectors, representing 5.48 % of the states geographical area. The forest land of the Dist: covers an area of 78787 hectors. The Scheduled Tribe population comes to 17.1% of the total population. The average literacy rate is 82.73%. There are three rivers in this Dist:. The main river of the Dist: is Kabani which is a tributary of River Caevery, the other rivers are in Mananthavady and Panamaram, which joint kabani . Generally the rivers in Kerala are west flowing,but in wayand all the rivers are eastflowing.
District Profile
This back word Dist: is perhaps one of the biggest foreign exchange earners of the state, thanks to the cash crops of pepper, cardamom, coffee, Tea, spices and other condiments. Climate
The year can be broadly divided into 4 seasons, Cold weather (December-February), Hot weather(March-May), South-west Monsoon (July-September) and North-west Monsoon (Octaber-November). The temperature varies from 11 degree to 35 degree and average rain fall is 300 cm per year.
Language
